Nemat Khana

Description

First published in 2014, Nemat Khana is one of the most acclaimed contemporary Urdu novels of recent years. Its English translation, The Paradise of Food by Baran Farooqi, made history as the first Urdu work to win the prestigious JCB Prize for Literature in 2022. The novel follows Zaheeruddin Babr, alias Guddu Miyan, an orphan narrating fifty years of life within a middle-class joint Muslim family, weaving themes of hunger, memory, violence, love, guilt, and confession around the intimate space of the family kitchen. The jury praised it as "a celebration of human spirit, hope, loss, aspirations, and anxiety," with a carnivalesque quality that makes it a strikingly modern fable. A landmark of modern Urdu fiction.
